Space for Inspiration 🚀

Image
Interesting event of European Space Agency in Bilbao this fall 29-31 October. "A unique opportunity to build cross-sector relationships, learn, and explore how research in the unique environment of space is creating opportunities to meet key challenges here on Earth, and how you could get involved". How can we combine remote sensing imagery from new satellite sensors  with ordinary ground zero data? Raster Imagery (DTM, Infrared, ...) + Ground zero sensors (Air pollution, smartphones,..)  The development of next gen remote sensing technologies particularly new sensors optimised in different wavelength regions of the electromagnetic spectrum will enhance the performance of future MCE analysis in environment, health (Spatial distribution patterns of diseases), climate change and sustainable urban management.

Objexs: Augmented Reality (AR) + GIS

Image
Hi there As you know I have always believed in the combination of GIS platforms with the irruption of new technologies such as conversational interfaces. Since GIS next gen platforms are like " virtual canvases " , the combination of new technologies such as AR with GIS powerful digital chasis will support professionals in a wide range of sectors, from enhancing experiential tourism to improving Healthcare public services.   Augmented Reality + GIS

Frequency of lightning strikes throughout the world

Image
Lightning is a sudden high-voltage discharge of electricity that occurs within a cloud, between clouds, or between a cloud and the ground. Globally , there are about 40 to 50 flashes of lightning every second, or nearly 1.4 billion flashes per year. These electrical discharges are powerful and deadly.

This map shows how many millions of children are exposed to dangerously high levels of pollution

Image
Almost one in seven children – a total of 300 million – live in areas with extreme air pollution, according to a  report  by UNICEF. That means that they are breathing air that exceeds international limits by at least six times.

Nasa research Antarctic’s ice flow

Image
A NASA study based on an innovative technique for crunching torrents of satellite data provides the clearest picture yet of changes in Antarctic ice flow into the ocean. The findings confirm accelerating ice losses from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and reveal surprisingly steady rates of flow from its much larger neighbor to the east.

The Middle East labyrinth

Image
The minorities in Turkey are exaggerated. Kurds (as a majority) do not extend west of Şanlıurfa or north of Iğdır. All of the purple, orange, green, blue dots throughout Turkey are not the majority languages today, merely small minorities. So to be realistic, today Turkey would be a giant green blob with a small burgundy enclave on the south-east.

Antarctica without ICE

Image
One of the earth’s most alien landmasses, the Antarctic’s rocky surface , concealed by a vertical ice crust of up to more than 3km (average thickness 1,6km), was unveiled, at least digitally, at an unprecedented detail in spring 2013. Scientists have created a significantly improved map of the continent’s bedrock in the frame of the bedmap2 project led by the British Antarctic Survey. While the previous version ‘bedmap’, produced in 2001, gave a general overview of the Antarctic’s topography, the high spatial resolution of bedmap2 shows a landscape of mountain ranges, hills and vast plateaus dissected by canyons and gorges. Thus, it conveys the cartography of the bedrock terrain much closer to reality than ever portrayed.

Access to potable water in primary schools in Africa

Examples of potable drinking water facilitiesinclude pipe-borne water, protected wells, boreholes, protected spring water and rainwater.

Global Costs of Diabetes

Image
To mark World Diabetes Day 2016, the Statista infographic below looks at the global cost of diabetes in 2015 and International Diabetes Federation projections for 2040. Around the world last year, 672 billion dollars was spent on healthcare to combat the ever-more prevalent disease. By 2040, this figure is forecast to rise to 803 billion with the largest share of expenditure in North America and the Caribbean.

Saudi Arabia ranked bottom in a list as the most toxic country due to its high levels of air pollution, while Kenya topped it as the country that creates the least damage to the planet.
